Flagstaff’s unique geography creates federal jurisdiction issues that don’t exist in most of Arizona. The Coconino National Forest, multiple national monuments and extensive tribal lands mean that crimes committed in these areas fall under exclusive federal jurisdiction regardless of their nature. This can transform minor offenses into federal cases with serious consequences.

The Northern Arizona University community generates federal cases involving drug distribution, student loan fraud and computer crimes. Flagstaff’s location along the I-40 corridor also makes it a transit point for drug trafficking, leading to DEA and HIDTA task force investigations that can result in multi-defendant conspiracy indictments.

Although my office is in Phoenix, I regularly represent Northern Arizona residents and I’m familiar with the specific challenges of federal cases originating in this region.
